About HOU

Founder - Teddy Namugenyi

Meet the founder and director of Hope for Orphans Uganda - Teddy Namugenyi. Teddy was born in Uganda in 1988 to a single mother who struggled to raise Teddy and her four other children. At age four Teddy was given into her father's custody, but was rejected and abused by her step mother and ignored by her father for several years before returning to her mother. At that point her father disowned her. Teddy lived with her mother who led her to faith in God until her mother died of AIDS when she was 10. Teddy was effectively an orphan but the Lord sent a "good Samaritan" in the form of a relative to care for her. He raised her to adulthood and provided her with the best possible education up till Makerere University in Kampala where she completed a BA in social work. It was during that time that Teddy's eyes were opened to the struggles and deprivations of many in her community, especially vulnerable young children who were orphaned and abandoned. Her heart was moved with compassion for these needy children and she realized that her own early experiences had sensitized her and prepared her to reach out to care for them. She had felt the pain, dread, fear and deprivation that she saw in their eyes.

After her graduation in 2010, Teddy felt God's calling on her life was to care full-time for these orphans. He led her to a property in Luweero, outside of Kampala that was available to rent. She began visiting children who were in need - in villages, on the streets of Kampala, and referred to her by pastors. Thus her work began as she took in these vulnerable ones to save them from misery and hunger.

Currently, HOU provides a home and education for 62 children ranging in age from 6 to 16 years. Over the years the Lord has provided funds to purchase the property Teddy began by renting, and to install many upgrades: latrines, solar-powered lights, a perimeter fence, a second building to increase dormitory space, a well and seven acres of adjacent land. He has provided for the nurture and education of these children for many years. He has demonstrated that there is hope for orphans!!
